As Venezuela prepares for the presidential inauguration on January 10, 2025, uncertainty looms over who will assume the presidency. Incumbent President Nicolás Maduro claims victory in the July 28, 2024 election, despite allegations of fraud by independent observers and international condemnation. The opposition candidate, Edmundo González, asserts that he won the election with 67% of the votes, as per tally sheets published by the opposition.
The government has intensified its efforts to lay claim to the presidency by increasing citizen repression and arbitrary arrests. The opposition, led by the popular leader María Corina Machado, has called for mass protests and dispatched Mr. González on a diplomatic tour across the Americas to garner support. As of this writing, Ms. Machado had been taken into custody. It was rumored in Miami that Gonzalez would appear in Venezuela to be sworn in as President.
On X, President Trump states that both of the “freedom fighters” should not be harmed, and the United States overwhelmingly supports a free Venezuela. Tomorrow will be a crucial day in the history of Venezuela.
Venezuela’s electronic voting system, set up by former President Hugo Chávez, has been praised by progressives and globalists for its transparency and ability to validate results. However, Mr. Maduro’s government has become increasingly authoritarian, and physical evidence suggests that Mr. González won the election. Perhaps the world should reconsider electronic tabulation in its elections.
The outcome of the inauguration could have significant implications for international diplomatic cooperation, the economy, and migration. As the world watches, the question remains: Who will lead Venezuela for the next six years? Will Trump’s word protect Venezuela’s freedom fighters?
