This is the best Christmas present for homeworkers

There’s no shame in admitting I’m a woman of needs.  Staying warm and comfortable while working on chilly days is one of them.

And I found a comfortable – and cost-saving – solution. Instead of cranking up the heat, or piling on layers of clothes, I’m snuggled up in a heated, plush throw.

It’s a simple buy that’s made a huge difference in my home. No longer do I hear the words: “No, we are not turning the heating on!” five times a day – because quite honestly, we don’t need to.

Since working from home became the norm, I’m all too proud to be one of those self-employed people who’s found the perfect balance between comfort and productivity. I’m patting my past self on the back for one of the best purchasing decisions I’ve ever made.

A revolutionary product that I invested in a few years back, it has 9 adjustable temperature settings. It’s big enough to cover the entire lower half of my body and most importantly, looks beautiful on my sofa.

It’s the Cosi Home luxury faux fur electric heated throw (£49.99, from Amazon and Cosi Home).

Back in 2022, heated throws such as mine were unfairly priced, capitalising on the surge of new home workers who suddenly had to find ways to keep warm or heat their homes in the daytime. Unsurprisingly, a lot of companies took advantage and raised their prices. But they’re a better buy now.

So, while I’m typing away on my laptop or attending virtual work meetings from wherever I am in the house, I can stay comfortably warm without heating the entire room. My partner is equally happy about it and frankly it means we don’t have to pay hundreds extra in heating bills.

What’s more, my kids absolutely love it. Cold 5am starts are made bearable by us all being under the blanket. Eating toast and enjoying my first morning coffee whilst staying snug is most certainly one of life’s luxuries. Not forgetting to mention that it’s as soothing and effective for cramps as a hot water bottle.

One standout feature is its energy efficiency. Costing only 2p per hour to run, it’s a dream to feel this content while keeping my clients happy. By only heating myself and not the entire room, I can enjoy a cosy work environment without worrying about soaring costs.

The advanced 9-hour timer safety feature with auto shut-off function; gives me peace of mind, especially for those moments when I may get too engrossed in my work and forget to turn off the blanket when dashing out to do the school pick-ups.

The combination of the warm and soft faux fur, with microfleece, makes my specific heated throw a luxurious addition to my home office and living room setup. Although you can feel – but not see – the thin wires inside, what still blows my mind is that the blanket can be bunged in the washing machine.

‘Tis the season for coughs, colds and all things germy, so being able to rinse the throw when it becomes grimy is a life saver. The remote control can also be easily detached prior to washing. All I need to do is throw the blanket in the washing machine at a low temperature to make it look brand new and smell fresh again. Just remember to hang it flat to dry and not to tumble dry it afterwards.

Unlike cranking up the central heating, which can drive up energy costs significantly, heated throws provide targeted warmth exactly where you need it most. By using a heated throw, you too can stay comfortably warm while keeping the rest of your space cooler, ultimately saving money on your heating bills.
